Melting real chocolate first (then cooling it) gives frozen hot chocolate its intense flavor. Cocoa adds depth without extra fat.
Ingredients
You’ll need: Blender
Method
Melt the chocolate with the cocoa, sugar and ¼ cup of the milk in the microwave in 30-second bursts, stirring until smooth. Let cool 5 minutes.
Add the chocolate mixture, remaining milk and ice to the blender.
Blend on high until slushy and smooth.
Pour into tall glasses and pile on whipped cream and chocolate shavings.
Tips
Freeze some of the milk in ice cube trays and use instead of ice for a stronger chocolate flavor.

Storing and reheating
Frozen drinks are best served immediately. Freeze any extra in ice cube trays and re-blend with a splash of milk later.
Choosing your chocolate
For drinks made with cocoa powder, Dutch-process gives a darker, smoother, mellower cup and natural cocoa a brighter, fruitier one. For melted chocolate, use a bar you’d enjoy eating: chips contain stabilizers that resist melting. See our cocoa and hot chocolate mix reviews and cocoa powder guide.
Frequently asked questions
Is frozen hot chocolate just a milkshake?
No: it’s made with ice and milk, not ice cream, so it’s lighter and slushier.
