How to make any mix taste better

  • Use milk, not water. Even half milk makes a big difference.
  • Add a square of dark chocolate and whisk until melted.
  • Add a pinch of salt and a drop of vanilla.
  • Too sweet? Whisk in a teaspoon of unsweetened cocoa.

Or skip the packet: homemade hot chocolate takes five minutes, and our homemade hot cocoa mix works just like a packet.

How we rated

We compared ingredients, price per serving and published taste tests (including Food Network Kitchen and PureWow’s blind tastings), and considered how each mix performs with milk. Prices checked October 2026. See how we test.
